Serving on the Executive Committee is a great way to learn about the Academy’s operations and serve the profession. While the Executive Committee involves a multi-year commitment, additional shorter-term volunteer opportunities are also available, which you can volunteer for at the same survey link above.

Nominations for Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Awards

The Awards and Scholarship Committee of the School Nutrition Services DPG is always willing to receive suggestions  for nominations for the School Nutrition Services DPG Award of Excellence and other Academy of Nutrition and dietetics Awards.  These awards are presented annually at the Academy’s Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo. This is your chance to recognize outstanding School Nutrition Services members!  If you are interested in nominating a member of the SNS DPG for any of the Academy Awards or the SNS DPG Excellence in Practice Award, please contact Carol Longley, Awards and Scholarship Chair at

Following is a list of the Academy’s Awards:

Qualifications, Scoring Criteria, and Award Packet requirements for each of the Academy awards are listed on the Academy web-site at  Honors and Awards.

Nominations are submitted on-line.

  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Presidents’ Circle Nutrition Education Award
    Recognizes the development and dissemination of scientifically sound nutrition information that is unique in concept, creative in presentation, free from specific commercial message or endorsement, and consistent with the mission, vision, values, positions, and policies of  the Academy and its Foundation.

  • Honorary Membership
    Awarded to up to three non-members every year based on their professional knowledge, technical expertise, and promotion of theAcademy’s mission, vision, and values.

  • Lenna Frances Cooper Lecture
    Honors an Academy member who has been recognized as a notable and inspiring speaker.

  • Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Award
    The highest honor the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics bestows on one of its members for contributions to the Academy through extensive, active participation and service at all levels of the Association.

  • Medallion Award
    This award honors Academy members who have shown dedication to the high standards of the dietetics profession through active participation, leadership, and devotion to serving others in dietetics and allied health fields.

  • Media Excellence Award
    Presented to an individual reporter, publication, or program for consistent, high-quality nutrition reporting.

  • Excellence in Practice Awards
    Recognizing outstanding registered dietitians and dietetic technicians, who have demonstrated innovation, creativity, and leadership in a specific area of practice.

School Nutrition Services DPG Excellence in Practice Award

Following is the SNS Excellence in Practice Award criteria.

  1. The nominee demonstrates innovation, creativity, and leadership inadvancing the quality and integrity of school nutrition programs.

  2. The nominee demonstrates exceptional performance in practice relating to school, nutrition programs and leadership achievements in nutrition-related organizations.

  3. The nominee must be an active Registered Dietitian, a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the School Nutrition Services DPG.

  4. Person submitting the nomination must be an active registered dietitian and a member of the Academy.


A nomination packet should be submitted no later than March 1to the SNS DPG Awards and Scholarship Chair. The packet contains the following:

  1. Nominee’s education and professional experience, including any previous awards or other honors;

  2. Evidence of nominee’s exceptional performance; for example, exemplifies “cutting edge” practice, serves as a mentor, or pioneered new methods.Include examples of results of nominee's innovation, creativity and leadership.

  3. Information regarding nominee’s leadership achievements in nutrition-related organizations.

  4. At least two letters of support.

DPG Processing:

The Awards and Scholarship Chair will form a committee with at least two additional members to evaluate the nominations.

Nominee will be selected by April 15th and nominee’s name will be submitted to the Academy for recognition at FNCE.


Frances Carr Parker Scholarship Fund

This endowment supports the Frances Carr Parker scholarship, which recognizes a longtime School Nutrition Services Professional, Frances Carr Parker, RD, LDN. The scholarship was established to support graduate studies to enhance job skills related to the practice of school nutrition. A $2,000 award is given through the award winner's university. An application will be available on Academy's Web site. The SNS DPG encourages individual members to make contributions, as well. The scholarship is in need of additional funds. Frances Carr Parker Endowment Fund gives annually a $2,000 award to a member to support graduate studies to enhance school nutrition. Applicant must be a RD, a member of SNS and have a child nutrition goal.
